Nutrition Risk Manual

Module Summary

It can be difficult to get client to fully participate in the assessment and gather the right information. This Module discusses tips for getting and keeping a participant involved, overcoming resistance and providing the appropriate referrals when necessary. It also discusses the G.I.F. process for recording information so that the appropriate follow up can occur.

Module Goals

  • Encourage an effective conversation in cases where participants are uninvolved in the appointment
  • You will be able to accurately document important points of your assessment

Module Highlights

During the “Nutrition Education” tips to keep them involved and make best use of both of your time during the appointment go for the quality education not quantity. Don’t give your participant every piece of advice you may have and over educate or steam roll at the end of the session, remember OARS.
  • Refer to your notes; it is whatever that you utilize to keep track of what you discussed or what a participant says to you throughout the appointment.
  • Address specific concerns of the client at time of expression; reflect on the concern again at the end of the appointment during summarization.
Allow time for silence, this may be awkward but trust in its effectiveness to allow time for the participant to give a well thought out or organized response/additional concerns or question.

Rolling with Resistance

When a participant is reluctant to respond, how do you complete an assessment without knowing what their greatest concerns or needs are? Maybe she feels uncomfortable about sharing some information, no need to push just "Ease on down the road".

Tangents and getting back on the road.

The participant just wandered off topic and you are unsure of how to bridge the conversation back to nutrition. Address what the issue is and empathize with the participant, then redirect back to WIC. They shared something important to them, so briefly acknowledge their concern before you move on. Every conversation is different. Use your skills to make the best of the situation.

Referrals When Necessary

Sometimes participants need more support, or they bring up things that are beyond our expertise.

Wrap it Up, Food Package Assignment and G.I.F.

  • Review significant points, draw attention to any goals, reflect on the positive, and develop a plan to follow up with at the next appointment. Listen for change talk, acknowledge it and thank the participant for taking the time to share with you.
  • Before ending the session, it is important to assign the appropriate food package considering the needs of the participant.
  • Print Food Instruments and politely escort the participant to the waiting room or lobby, return to your work station. It is time to G.I.F.

G.I.F (Goals, Info, Follow Up):

After the assessment there is still work to be done. G.I.F. allows information to be kept safe until next time. We can seamlessly pick up where we left off at the previous appointment by leaving concise notes. Make their visit memorable every time.
  • G: Goals of the participant. Did the client verbalize any change talk? Affirm the client on where they have come with the goals. Is there anything we can do to help achieve their goal?
  • I: Interesting info to pass along and document, why a WIC code was assigned. This can be the meat and potatoes of why a goal was checked or a WIC coded assigned, or documentation of what the client stated. If the participant is a mom it is important to document her pregnancy history here.
  • F: Follow Up Notes: “Lets pick up where we left off”
Now it is time for you to view a video and then practice with the activities.
